With the rising cost of energy and growing concerns about climate change, more and more people in New Jersey are looking for sustainable, cost-effective ways to power their homes. Solar power offers a compelling solution—not just for environmental benefits, but also for financial gains. By investing in solar panels, New Jersey residents can generate passive income and enjoy a range of incentives that make the transition to solar energy even more attractive. In this article, we’ll explore how New Jersey homeowners can turn their solar panels into profit, covering the main advantages such as net metering, State solar production incentives, and the long-term financial benefits of solar panel installations.

Net Metering: Your Gateway to Passive Income

Net metering is a crucial component of earning passive income through solar power. This program allows homeowners to feed the excess electricity generated by their solar panels back into the grid. When your solar system produces more energy than your household consumes, the surplus energy is sent to the grid, and you receive credits on your electricity bill. These credits can be used to offset the cost of electricity you draw from the grid when your panels aren’t producing enough power, usually at night, on cloudy days or during a storm. Homeowners enrolled in this program are only billed for the net amount of power that they use, which in some cases means no charges at all!

New Jersey Solar Production Incentives

Beyond net metering, there are additional opportunities to sell excess energy back to the grid. New Jersey’s energy market allows solar homeowners to participate in programs where they can sell Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). Each REC represents one megawatt-hour of electricity generated by your solar system. These certificates can be sold to utilities and other energy companies that need to meet renewable energy requirements.

New Jersey’s Successor Solar Incentive (SuSI) Program enhances this opportunity with two sub-programs: the Administratively Determined Incentive (ADI) and the Competitive Solar Incentive (CSI).

Administratively Determined Incentive (ADI)

The ADI program offers a fixed-incentive payment for residential, most commercial and industrial, and community net metered solar projects. Payments are guaranteed for 15 years and range from $70 to $120 for every megawatt hour of energy your system produces, depending on the type and size of your solar project. This provides a reliable and steady income stream, ensuring that your investment in solar panels pays off over the long term.

Competitive Solar Incentive (CSI)

For larger projects exceeding 5 megawatts, the CSI program involves a competitive solicitation process. This program aims to secure the lowest financial contribution from rate-payers for solar projects that provide energy directly to the grid, making it an excellent option for larger-scale commercial and industrial solar installations.

NJ Solar Incentives to Maximize Your Savings

New Jersey offers several incentives that make solar power more affordable and profitable. Here are two key programs to be aware of:

NJ Solar Sales Tax Exemption

This incentive allows a 100% sales tax exemption on all major solar equipment purchased for your home. This means you save 7% upfront, making the initial investment in solar panels more manageable for all taxpayers.

NJ Property Tax Exemption

When you install a solar system, the value of your property typically increases. Under this incentive, home and business owners are not taxed on the increase in property value due to the addition of a solar energy system. This ensures that your property taxes remain unchanged, even as your home’s market value rises.

Long-Term Financial Benefits of Solar Power

Investing in solar panels offers substantial long-term financial benefits. The initial cost of installation is offset by state incentives, tax exemptions, and the ability to earn passive income through net metering and selling excess energy. Over time, the savings on your electricity bills and the income generated from RECs can significantly outweigh the upfront costs, providing a strong return on investment.

Moreover, solar panels can increase the value of your home, making it more attractive to potential buyers. A solar-powered home with low energy costs is a desirable feature in today’s market, ensuring you reap the benefits if you decide to sell your property in the future.

NJ Homes & Businesses are Ideal for Solar Energy

Solar power is the ideal sustainable solution for powering your home or your business. As we’ve previously mentioned, the state of New Jersey has a range of incentives and tax credits you can use to your advantage to make it even more affordable. If you’re ready to make the switch from traditional energy to solar energy, our team at Green House Solar is happy to walk you through each step. As Earth Day approaches, it’s essential to reflect on our environmental impact and consider how we can make positive changes, especially within the confines of our homes. The mission for Earth Day is simple: let’s leave the planet in a better place than when we found it. While the task may seem daunting at first, no effort is too small or insignificant – you just have to start. And what better place to start than where you wake up each and every day? At Green House Solar, we understand the importance of sustainability and have compiled a few easy ways that homeowners can be more environmentally conscious in preparation for Earth Day and everyday moving forward.

Energy-Efficient Appliances: Start by replacing old, energy-guzzling appliances with newer, more efficient models. Look for appliances with ENERGY STAR ratings, which indicate they meet high standards for energy efficiency. By reducing your energy consumption, you can lower your carbon footprint and even save money on your utility bills each month.

LED Lighting: Another simple yet effective way to reduce energy consumption is by switching to LED lighting. LED bulbs use significantly less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and last much longer, reducing the need for frequent replacements. Make the switch throughout your home to save energy, while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Proper Insulation and Sealing: Seal gaps and cracks around windows, doors, and other openings to prevent heat loss in the winter and keep cool air inside during the summer. Adequate insulation helps maintain a comfortable indoor temperature year-round, while reducing the need for excess heating and cooling.

Solar Energy: One of the most impactful decisions you can make for both the environment (and your finances) is to switch to solar energy. Solar panels harness the power of the sun to generate clean, renewable electricity for your home. By investing in solar power, you can reduce or even eliminate your reliance on fossil fuels, significantly reducing your carbon footprint. Plus, with various incentives and rebates available, there’s never been a better time to make the switch. With the federal solar tax credit, homeowners can save 30% on all solar panel installations beginning in 2022 and extending all the way to 2032.

Energy-Efficient Solar Panels for Your NJ Home

At Green House Solar, we’re here to help you every step of the way on your journey to solar energy. Our team can assist you in navigating the available incentives and finding the best solar solution for your home. From the initial consultation to the installation of your SunPower solar panel system, we’ll be with you throughout the process to ensure a smooth and seamless transition.

This Earth Day, let’s all commit to making environmentally-friendly choices starting with where we have the most control – in our homes. Whether it’s upgrading to energy-efficient appliances or finally investing in solar energy, every step we take can positively affect the world we live in and future generations to come.

Have you heard of the Inflation Reduction Act? In 2022, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) marked a pivotal moment, sparking unprecedented investments in clean energy and various eco-friendly initiatives. Although the allocation of funds for numerous aspects of these endeavors is still in progress, several provisions within the act hold the potential to ease the accessibility of renewable energy for non-profit organizations. Beyond contributing to the battle to address the climate crisis, this endeavor is poised to extend the advantages of the clean energy transition to historically marginalized communities. In this article, the team at Green House Solar will go over the IRA more in depth and discuss why it’s especially important for non-profit property owners.

How the IRA Makes it Easy for Non-profit Property Owners to Access Renewable Solar Energy

In recent years, a crucial driving force for the U.S. solar industry was the federal solar investment tax credit (ITC). This credit allowed qualified commercial investors to receive a tax credit equivalent to 30% of the solar installation cost, resulting in substantial savings — especially during a period when solar expenses were higher than they are today. Despite its advantages, this tax credit has limitations.

Prior to the enactment of the IRA, only homeowners and commercial entities with tax liability could claim tax credits for solar panel installations. Nonprofits, aiming to adopt solar solutions, often had to involve tax equity investors — major financial institutions leveraging tax credits to diminish federal tax liabilities. Apart from being logistically complex, these arrangements ran up significant transactional costs and administrative burdens, particularly for nonprofits facing resource constraints.

The Inflation Reduction Act introduces a major improvement through the establishment of a new “direct pay” (referred to by the U.S. government as “elective pay”). This credit delivery mechanism allows governments and nonprofits to directly access clean energy tax credits without relying on tax equity investors. Instead of a reduction in federal tax liability, eligible entities, including tribal communities, nonprofits, municipalities, public power utilities, and rural electric co-operatives, can receive the tax credit as a payment. This groundbreaking shift means that all nonprofit property owners now qualify for the credit, and the resulting savings can be directly passed on to them.

Navigating the IRA with Green House Solar in NJ

Additionally, within the IRA, there are supplementary tax credits extended to specific projects that contribute to job generation and the advancement of the clean energy economy. These extra incentives come in the form of labor and domestic manufacturing bonus credits, particularly for projects developed in designated priority communities. These communities encompass energy communities, which have traditionally served as focal points for the fossil fuel industry, as well as low-income and underserved areas. By leveraging these bonus tax credits, customers can essentially push their savings beyond the initial 30% ITC credit.

If you’re a non profit property owner who needs help navigating the Inflation Reduction Act, please give the team at Green House Solar a call today. We’d be happy to discuss all the solar financing options available to you and recommend the best route for your unique situation. solar panels

At a high level, installing a home solar panel system is really establishing a power plant on your roof. So, it’s only natural to ask, is it safe? We understand that when it comes to your home and your loved ones living inside, safety is the number one priority – as it should be! That being said, the solar energy experts at Green House Solar are here to put your worries to rest. Our team has answered some frequently asked solar safety questions. Let’s take a closer look:

Is solar safe for my home?

There are a few aspects to Solar energy safety when looking at Residential Solar which typically involves panels installed on the roof. One aspect is the physical safety of the installation, the weight of them on your roof. Green House Solar’s team carefully inspects the condition of your roof, the age of your shingles, the sub-roof plywood and many other elements. Measurements are taken and calculations made to ensure that the roof structure is sufficient to support the weight of the solar system, including snow loads and anticipated wind shears and we will make or recommend appropriate repairs if necessary, prior to an installation. We will never place a solar array on a roof that can’t confidently support the weight for the lifetime of the panels. And with decades of solar experience, we don’t take shortcuts with materials or mounting options because they are faster/cheaper.

Are some solar systems safer for my home than others?

Another safety concern is the electrical aspects of solar safety. After all, the whole point of this is to have the panels generate and distribute voltages and currents to your home and possibly the grid, and potentially charge your backup battery system. All of this must be handled correctly and carefully to ensure maximum safety.

At Green House Solar, we prefer systems utilizing micro-inverters for our residential customers. Micro-inverters convert the electricity generated from DC to AC at the solar panel. This means that the electricity on the roof is lower voltage (and safer) with micro-inverters as opposed to string inverters. Micro-inverters also have other advantages that maximize production when partial shading is a concern.

One other thing to consider is the electrical knowledge base of the company designing and installing your solar system.  The owner of Green House Solar is a licensed electrical contractor. Our knowledge of code and general electrical work gives us a leg up on many installers who need to stick to one way of doing things.

What about solar back-up batteries? Which battery is safest for my home?

There are two main chemistry types of home energy storage batteries currently on the market – Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) and Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP).  Here at Green House Solar, we recommend and install LFP batteries exclusively because of their safer chemistry – they will not combust when punctured.

What kinds of permits and approvals are required before my system can be installed?

At the local municipal level, permit applications are submitted for structural and electrical approval, including fire official approval. State and utility submissions are also required. As is the case with many home improvement projects, following installation and commissioning, inspectors will review the work to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.

What are some of the regulations that ensure my solar system is safe?

There are many regulations in place to ensure that the design of your residential solar system is safe. These have evolved over time so that solar systems installed today are safer than ever.  Green House Solar follows all requirements and as mentioned before, we are licensed electricians. Regulations include fire codes which specify the size and location of pathways for firefighters should they need access. In addition, there are specific requirements for disconnects and shutoff capabilities that will stop electricity production immediately should the need arise. Stamped electrical and structural engineering designs are generally required for residential systems and are part of the permit application process.

By choosing solar panels installed by licensed electricians, you not only enjoy the economic benefits of solar energy, but also do your part to create a cleaner and greener future. At Green House Solar, we can address all your safety concerns, help you navigate the process of installing solar panels, and take advantage of all the tax incentives available. Let There Be Light!

Solar panel maintenance in the summer is necessary to maintain the efficiency of your home solar system. With all the sunshine the season offers, it is a peak production period.

Because solar panels are designed to be durable, withstand the elements, and have no moving parts, they need very little maintenance. But it is good practice to clean the solar panels once a year and remove anything that might be blocking sun from the panels. It is the best maintenance to review the solar panel monitoring system to ensure it is still performing optimally.

Give the solar panels a good clean this summer and let there be light!

Solar System Warranty and Panel Cleaning.

Solar panel installation in NJ is often covered by a warranty. Before cleaning any panels, review the terms and conditions of the solar system and panel warranty. Sometimes cleaning is covered by a maintenance warranty. If you feel the warranty is unclear in this matter, contact your solar service provider.

Call In The Professionals for Rooftop Solar Panel Cleaning.

When you have a rooftop solar system, safety must always be the first consideration. Let a professional service provider clean the panels as they have all the necessary equipment to work safely on a rooftop. Ask your solar service provider if they clean panels or can provide a recommendation.

How to Make Ground-Mounted Solar Panels Shine.

Residential solar panels in NJ are sometimes ground-mounted, and you might choose to clean the panels yourself. SunPower suggests cleaning the panels early in the morning or evening, as high heat will cause streaks and smears. However, if you feel more comfortable having your solar panels maintained professionally, our experts at Greenhouse Solar are always available.

Remove The Shade.

Solar panels must be kept free from shade to function optimally. Check during daylight hours for trees or plants that shade the panels and trim them back. If there are other obstructions, remove them if possible.

Review The Solar Panel Monitoring System.

Double-check that the light of the inverters is flashing green. It is an indication that there are no problems with the system.

Our experts at Greenhouse solar provide high-quality solar installation, back up power and maintenance in Morris County and Northern NJ, for both residential and commercial properties. If you need assistance with solar panel maintenance in the summer, please contact our team at Green House Solar today. We look forward to hearing from you.

Home solar Morris County NJ

We’re all looking for ways to reduce our energy consumption and be more environmentally friendly. Home solar panels are an excellent solution for those who want to use completely renewable energy to power their homes. They also enable you to cut down on your monthly power costs. We recommend learning as much as possible about solar panels before making the decision, and to help, here are 10 key things you should know:

  1. Not all roofs are suitable for solar panels and you need a professional to inspect your roof to determine its suitability. If your roof isn’t suitable you can still use solar panels, they’ll just be placed somewhere else on your property to ensure maximum impact.
  2. Solar panels are one of the most low-maintenance options on the market. They rarely need servicing, and only need to be cleaned every so often.
  3. Many people think installing solar panels is not in their budget. However, solar panels have actually become much more affordable over the years, making them a realistic option for many homeowners.
  4. Solar panel installation is quick and should not take any longer than a week. There’s no long construction process to interrupt your daily living. You’ll be up and running in a few short days!
  5. Solar panels are fully recyclable so none of their components will go to waste. Solar panels have a very long life, and a well-made solar panel will last on average around 30 years, but when it’s time to replace them you can recycle them.
  6. When you have solar panels you contribute to cleaner air for both your family and your community.
  7. Contrary to popular belief, solar panels do not require direct sunlight to generate power. They can still generate electricity on overcast days and during the colder winter months.
  8. Solar panels can be used to heat your pool. Heating your swimming pool can cause a huge increase in monthly energy costs, and solar panels provide a clean, budget-friendly alternative to traditional heating methods.
  9. Solar panels can increase the value of your home.
  10.  When your solar panels generate more electricity than your home needs, you can sell this excess energy back to the power company.

Enjoy the many benefits of home solar panels

As you can see, installing solar panels has many well-known and hidden advantages. If you’ve been thinking about solar installation for your home, we recommend contacting your local solar company and learning more about your options.

residential solar

The solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) is part of a federal policy that incentivizes home and business owners to install solar energy systems, and it makes solar panels more affordable for people across the country. To encourage more property owners – both commercial and residential – to invest in clean energy for their properties, the ITC allows for a 26% tax credit, meaning you can deduct 26% of the total installation cost of your solar energy systems and save thousands of dollars by going solar. Not to mention the money you’ll also save on your monthly energy bills! Also, there is no cap on its value, so if you’re a commercial property owner and want to convert all your current energy systems to solar, you can save a substantial amount of money while reducing your environmental footprint and enjoying the many benefits of solar energy.

To qualify for the ITC, the only requirement is that you own your solar energy system. When it comes time to file your federal tax return for the year, let your accountant know that you’ve converted to a solar energy system and they will help you claim the ITC. If you file your own taxes, there are several helpful online guides that can assist you.

We’ve seen several pieces of legislation at the state and national levels over the past few years that incentivize property owners who convert to solar energy systems. As we all take steps to reduce our carbon footprint and make environmentally friendly choices, investing in a solar energy system is an excellent choice, and for homeowners and business owners who qualify for the ITC, it’s an affordable option.

earth month

Earth Month is a great time to rethink your lifestyle and find ways to bring more earth-friendly practices into your home and daily life. Of course, going green isn’t just about the planet – it’s about your wallet too! Here are five tips for saving not only money but also the planet, from one of the leading solar companies in Morris County, NJ.

1. Replace Inefficient Tech and Appliances

Brands have seen that customers want to save money and do more for the planet. So, the tech we use in our daily lives has become impressively energy and water-efficient. If your appliances are nearing the end of their lifecycle, now’s the time to invest in earth-friendly tech. Look for dishwashers, washing machines, and dryers with high Energy Star ratings, replace your old incandescent bulbs with LED lights, install a smart thermostat, and swap out your electric stove for a natural gas one.

2. Insulate and Seal Your Home

The better insulated and sealed your home is, the less heating and cooling it requires, which means huge savings in both summer and winter. There are great, high-performance eco-friendly insulation choices too, including wool, recycled cotton/denim, Icynene, ThermaCork, and cellulose. Remember to seal and weather-proof external doors and windows too, and make sure your roofing is in good repair.

3. Leave the Car at Home

We all love our cars and few of us can do without them. But, it’s important to leave them at home when we can. Your average car emits a massive 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide each year! So, it really pays to use public transport, walk or cycle to your destination – even if it’s just a few times a week. It’s also great for your health and you save on gas and maintenance!

4. Waste Less

In the USA alone, around 40% of food goes to waste – ending up in a landfill where it rots and releases greenhouse gasses. To help reduce your waste, plan your meals ahead for each week, compost your raw fruit and vegetable peelings, and only buy what you need when you need it. Another good idea is to go meat-free once a week, as livestock is a significant contributor to greenhouse gasses as well. It’s also less expensive to eat vegetarian, so think of all the cash you’ll save!

5. Go Solar

Home solar panels and solar panel installation in New Jersey is a great option for anyone wanting great long-term savings that benefit the planet. Thanks to New Jersey’s solar incentives program, homeowners can help pay off their solar systems even faster by selling excess energy to the grid. There are also a wide range of financing options to make this project more affordable for all homeowners, including solar leasing. It also increases the value of your home, so you’ll benefit while you live there and when you sell!
